Martika

Martika is one of my all time favourite popstars, despite only releasing two albums. Her debut is perfect late 80s teen pop and the sophomore album is a much more mature but still enjoyable affair. It almost felt like she went straight from Like A Virgin to Like A Prayer. I’ve always wanted to hear Martika’s True Blue!

I was obsessed with this song and wish it had been a single

Love love love her 2 albums, but her “comeback” single from the last decade was absolutely dreadful.

I remember being so excited to finally get new Martika material and then we got… that.

I always thought it was a shame Martika fell off the face of the earth after her two albums. She had such a great voice. I read an interview recently where she said she should have taken a break from music and then returned, rather than disappear forever.

I always wish this Michael Jay bop had been included on her debut

but at least we got the amazing Alisha version

She seriously came so close in stealing my gay ass heart from Madonna in 1989, I played the album soooo much more than Like A Prayer

Her original demo of Blue Eyes Are Sensitive To The Light is also very good, missed opportunity not to release it.

Anyone who has the confidence to send their poetry to Prince and then get him to actually work with you deserves a longer career than what Martina had. That’s tenacity.

I love both albums but Love Thy Will Be Done is the most gorgeous song. It makes me stop whatever I’m doing when it comes on.

I don’t recall her doing a new song in the last decade but your reviews don’t make me want to seek it out.

Love … Thy Will Be Done is in my top 5 songs. Just pure bliss and Prince at his finest. She could als bring the bops too with Martika’s Kitchen, More Than You Know, Cross My Heart, and Spirit.

I posted the video above, it’s called “Flow With The Go”. It’s horrible and nothing like she ever did, but she looked great in the video. I think it was from 2012 or so?

Yeah I regret pressing play on that.

From March 2016

One of my all time favourite B-sides

Martika still has one of my favourite voices in pop, so powerful and distinctive.

Just came across this on YouTube for the first time

It’s amazing, so PWL! I could imagine this on Sonia’s debut album. I wish this had made the cut for Martika.

Wonder how many other Martika demos are out there?

Oh that song was done by The Cover Girls in 1990! Had no idea Martika did it too, it was from an album of American artists covering Russian pop songs.

There’s also a demo called Rub U Down from Martika’s Kitchen, it won’t let me embed the YT video.

Exchange of Hearts is her Careless Whisper!

Absolutely loved the first album, I had that on cassette and played it to death.

Spirit should have been the 3rd single in all it’s Vogue-mimicking glory. Perhaps even second single with Martika’s kitchen as third as that was always going to be a hit.
