Martika

Spirit is a banger. Yeah the first time I heard it in the mid 00s (on discovering the album in a charity shop) I just thought ‘this is the Vogue backing track!’. I find the second album has really high highs but really forgettable and bland lows, whereas the debut is pretty much all brilliant.

It’s weird cause I don’t remember going ‘that’s a Vogue’ then but I definitely screamed ‘you’re going to jail!!’ on my replay last year.

Those three beats that kick in at 00:48 on the album version may as well be followed by “strike a pose”!

Wasn’t there an awful single remix that took all the Vogue styling out and it was just a mess?

Yes, it was the ‘house mix’.

Yeah I listened to it yesterday and it was weird. A re-recorded vocal to by the sounds of it. Apple Music calls it the Radio Edit. I don’t think it got a release as a single in the UK at the time though? Kind of weird given the first two were decent enough sized hits.

They just let the Martika’s Kitchen era die didn’t they - but also not sure what could’ve been done. There were no singles left after the first two.

OBSESSED with the positivity of this Discogs review

At least Netherlands got the song’s only (as far as I know) official release. The initial promotional copy I had only had two remixes on - the House Mix and Hip Hop Mix (both remixed by Dancin’ Danny D - better known as the driving force behind D-Mob). I particularly loved the rollicking piano riffs of the House Mix, extending the magic of the song for a whopping and exhilarating eight minutes. This was re-packaged somewhat as a slightly shorter Monster Club Mix for the Netherlands 12" vinyl single (alongside some instrumentals and a vocal only mix). Around the same time, a Monster Club Mix of Cathy Dennis’ Why (with D-Mob) was circulating the clubs and the two songs made for quite the enticing dance floor frenzy. The commercial release also had a slightly longer Hip Hop Mix - neither of these mixes appear to have been released anywhere else (including the deluxe re-release of Martika’s Kitchen), making them quite the delicious collectibles…

Danny D ruined the single mix of ‘Why’ as well.

I’m guessing he was getting the $$ after the smash debut Cathy era and just doing whatever at that point
