Metal for Gays

What it says on the tin!

A place for us to share rock and metal bands that may not necessarily get a lively thread, but get a little head banging session from us here.

(@Subwaykid, please feel free to shimmy the thread if it belongs elsewhere)

Totally fallen in love with PUPIL SLICER recently. They’ve just partnered with TAYNE to put out this industrialised version of my favourite song (White Noise) from their latest album:

I used to really enjoy Avenged Sevenfold back when I had my edgy phase around 2010-ish. Self-titled and Nightmare were core texts for me. A Little Piece of Heaven is a difficult song to recommend because of the… subject matter but just on the musical merits it’s a barmy, Danny Elfman-tinged thrill. Afterlife I would argue is basically a pop song with a metal coat of paint, I sung a version of it once for a choir audition. And then on Nightmare I was a big fan of So Far Away and Fiction, and basically any of the moments which felt like a sincere tribute to their deceased band member.

I liked Metallica, System of a Down, and Evanescence a fair bit too. Fairly standard set of opinions on them: Metallica peaked with Black Album, et cetera. I quite liked some of the songs on Death Magnetic, particularly the more ballad-y tracks like The Day That Never Comes and The Unforgiven III. I quite liked all three of Evanescence’s first albums, Good Enough on The Open Door I think still holds up as a gorgeous and sweet song.

Which I think all speaks to how I ended up falling out of the genre actually - I feel like a lot of bands go for music which might be technically impressive to perform but wasn’t necessarily more interesting for it. And I am reluctant to revisit the genre these days for fear of it being… potentially a big MAGA-y.

I need to get more into Nemophila already. Their latest EP is pretty cool.

And I apparently don’t know how to embed. dd

I’ve been listening to Don Broco’s new album a lot recently. It feels really nostalgic for bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit.

I love this one… set at the same location as A Second to Midnight:

This one gives me the feels also:

I fully hear your concerns - I hope you’ll rejoin the genre with the help of this thread because it has got so much talent standing on the correct side of history.

Some of my favourite metal albums;

Swedish power metal full of killer riffs and pop hooks.

Kind of 80’s inspired anthem heavy metal

Witchy, bluesy swamp metal

Pop-metal with wall-to-wall bangers

One of my favourites; beautiful melodies, ferocious roars and neck breaking Djent/Electronica riffs

Glad to see this topic is back on PSQ! I love metal and learned to be obsessed with music through the metal scene, so I love to see similarly hard hitting production and darker aesthetics in pop.

Anyone into late 90s/early 00s grrl metal like Jack off Jill, My Ruin, Kittie etc? My boyfriend got me this iconic album on the RSD vinyl last Christmas:

Back in October, Instagram introduced me to Liverpudlian prog-rock trio Exploring Birdsong. They’ve been around for a while, but their debut album “Every House We Built” drops in June, and the three singles so far have been stellar.

Kind of obsessed with the album aesthetic, giving estate agent-core

Oh hey, so ecstatic to see this thread pop up again. I arguably listen to rock/metal more than pop music, so I’m looking forward to sharing my favorites and findings as well as yours.

Already seeing a few bands I love (Don Broco, Exploring Birdsong), so this feels like home!

One last thing, back then I created a Spotify playlist compiling every song that’d get posted on the Popjustice thread. I haven’t looked at it for quite a while, but I had made it collaborative in case you guys also wanted to add anything. It’s still available here:

Now that Popjustice is no more, I was wondering if the wise move would be to consider that playlist finished and so, I could turn the collaborative mode off for it. Eventually, we can start a new one tied to this place instead?

This felt inevitable after Electric Callboy’s amazing cover of this last year.
