General discussion for Italian pop music
Been on a deep dive into Anna Oxa these past few weeks and I’m completely obsessed. Such a distinctive voice and look!!
Her live album in collaboration with New Trolls is so good! I’ve had it on repeat for the past week!
Her Sugar Daddy is the one for me!
A lethal face card!
Why am I not seeing any evidence that you stan Annalisa yet, mi amore???
I don’t really listen to contemporary Italian pop but Esibizionista is a bop!
Can you please join PS Retro and educate me on non-contemporary Italian music please? <3 <3
I’ve been diving into older Italian music lately, and it’s been such an incredible journey! Mina was the only one I really knew (and loved) before, but now I’m completely obsessed with all these divas… Anna Oxa, Patty Pravo, Mia Martini, Loredana Bertè, Rettore, Ivana Spagna… it’s been such a fun ride.
Oh please please share suggestions or a playlist to have a deep dive into Italian retro Pop.
I became obsessed since the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack and now I have a few songs by Loredana, Franco Battiato and of course Raffaela.
A few years ago I discovered Mahmood, but please feel free to share singers from the 70s,80s or even 00s and 10s.
I also like some Eros Ramazzotti and Tiziano Ferro songs from the 00s when they did their crossover to Spanish music/songs.
Two of the best purchases I made during my trip to Italy last month. The price is a bit steep, but they’re absolutely worth it. Both books are incredible… a magnificent piece of archival work!
Loredana’s discography is absolutely epic. She’s a total badass and still going strong in her 70s, continuing to bring the same energy and attitude.
My favorite Loredana song:
You’ve gotta check out her sister, Mia Martini… she had one of the most emotional and beautiful voices in Italian music. Anna Oxa, too, is an absolute queen, with a super distinctive voice and look. Mina is the QUEEN, but her discography is so huge that it can be a bit overwhelming for a new listener. Then there’s Rettore, who’s just a blast, especially if you enjoy wild performances and big personalities, while Ivana Spagna is great whether you’re into her dance-pop era or the more traditional Italian music she made in the '90s. And don’t sleep on Patty Pravo… her '60s and '70s stuff is flawless, and some of the more experimental music she put out in the '80s is really cool too. Italian music is such a rabbit hole once you start exploring…
You’ve gotta listen to Giorgia then… she was the voice of the '90s and 2000s in Italy, and she blends pop and R&B incredibly well. One of the best vocalists the country has ever produced, in my opinion.
@TheBrazilianGuy oh wow thank you! I will treat your response as gospel, can’t wait to dive into it
There’s honestly so much to cover, but I tried to suggest a few artists that immediately came to mind. When I have more time I can add some song suggestions too. Have fun exploring! It’s such a rewarding rabbit hole to go down!
