I just got Summer Time: The Singles Collection, and it’s overwhelming in the best way. 28 hours is a lot, but I’m loving the early work right now. Truly a queen!

Excellent set. Well worth the money I think.

Seeing her in this section stings. She should still be with us. Crayons was such a lovely record as her final long-form work.

I hope Kelly Rowland finds her way to a biopic. It would be such a terrific tribute.

So nice to see this Donna Summer thread here. Thank you @WhatKindOfKylie for starting it/continuing it.

You are very welcome! I love Donna Summer, she is in my opinion, the greatest voice of all time. A woman who did so much and led the way for those Divas who were to follow.

Donna Summer - for me THE Voice (sorry Whitney…). (on second thought, an honour Donna shares with Dusty). Once Upon a Time is her best album, for me. Now I Need You takes me to places emotionally and even physically!

Donna’s voice in general takes me to places emotionally and physically. It really does touch your soul I think.

No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) is forever THAT song. Whether I’m single or in a relationship a man is getting dumped during those 8 minutes.

The original and the best version. No covers could ever come close.

This will always hit me hard. Bad Girls is such a hallmark of disco, double albums, all that. She pioneered so much.

Bad Girls, is such a fresh album to this very day. It’s influence can still be heard even now in today’s music.

I love the ballad side on Bad Girls. I know her bops are the most popular but she could deliver a strong ballad. I love that the ballad side builds to My Baby Understands, one of Donna’s best vocals.

And just the sheer scope of genres she sings on the album is insane. She won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Female for Hot Stuff. I just learned she won it for the first year the category was introduced. She was nominated for Best R&B Vocal Female for Dim All the Lights and Best Pop Vocal Performance for the overall album. The title track was also nominated for Best Disco Recording.

Donna winning Best Female Rock Vocal for Hot Stuff and being nominated several times more in the same category, really was just proof how versatile she really was.

Double post apologies, but I had to post this bop I am listening to:

Timeless classic. Feels like still far away in the future even now.

Coming in here to say that I discovered Work that Magic through her Popjustice thread, and wow what a moment most pleasing. Also love that Mistaken Identity album cover.

Forever a lost hit

Yep. Much better than the singles mixes too. Such a touching song, and became an instant fave of mine as soon as I first played the album.

I finally committed to listening to Donna’s albums in full and chronologically, but the more I’m a Rainbow lore I stumbled across, the more I knew I had to skip ahead.

I’m still digesting it (along with a good chunk of her 70s work) but it certainly lived up to my expectations. The rich blend of sounds is remarkable and ageing beautifully. The run of Melanie-Back Where You Belong-People Talk is outstanding.

It’s great to discover a lost masterpiece but also a bummer. Donna was on a unique creative high here and it’s a travesty that she couldn’t share it with the world at that time in her career.
