Have been giving Without Love a blast today and got wondering about her third album.
Apparently she felt the sound was dated compared to Whitney’s album but the label tried remixing it. I wonder what songs actually got remixed for it? Maybe Say You Love Me? I thought I read somewhere Rhett Lawrence had produced this but the liner notes indicate mixing and production by the Candymen.
Question if Livin For The Weekend 98 was meant for the original album but got tacked on to change the sound of the album? Ditto Without Love which was written and produced by the Canny team who did the Livin… remix. In fact I wonder why they ended up shunning the Canny production of Without Love for the Dav Sears one? (That said I love and prefer the Dave Sears one).
I feel like First Avenue were just cutting their losses by shelving the album. 1999 was a catastrophe for all of their acts. She isn’t wrong in that it is more dated than Whitney’s, but If also don’t see her going in the direction Whitney did on that album and having as slick of production.
That being said, Straight to My Soul deserved a shot.
The debut album is pretty much no filler. I didn’t bother with the second album until several years later and I can’t say much of it ever stuck with me which is a shame because she certainly had the voice and the lead single was good too. I’m not sure what went wrong but on some channel 5 hits of the 90s show a few years back some man who I think was from HMV said how she could have been the British Whitney and should be more celebrated. I agree!
