Cyndi Lauper

Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think there’s a topic in Comeback Corner for Cyndi, so I have made one here.

The full Shine album really needs to be on streaming ASAP.

Water’s Edge really was the ballad I’d been waiting for from her. I remember during that Naptster et al era and getting my hands on a mp3 of a live performance (not sure it was Lilith Fair, but I seem to recall it being a predominantly female audience), and the crowd went wild for it and it wasn’t even out yet.

So glad she performed Shine on the farewell tour - seeing it go down so well made we beam with pride. She was totally denied a comeback moment here, and what a powerful lyric the middle 8 delivers in the context of her career. I think production-wise it’s a little on the cheap side and just needed a little extra fuel in the tank. For me, the album is like they created the most exciting bunch of demos I could ever have dreamed for her. It’s Hard To Be Me is hard to deny, but it lacks the lavish fizz that, say, Money Changes Everything has. She should definitely get it on streaming - in spite of it leaking amidst the label going bankrupt (or whatever happened), I still very much felt the entire album could have been given a 2nd go at some point.

I think William Wittman is an incredible collaborator for her and would definitely hope another LP would warrant giving him a call again. But I’d also want her to continue where she left off on Bring Ya To The Brink, which I very much think is her best album since She’s So Unusual (and actually tops it in terms of sheer consistency).
