With less than one hour left of the voting period, I think everyone has voted! But I will still wait for midnight on Baker Island before posting the Who Sent What list.
As a little intermission - if anyone was wondering about my avatar change, it’s not a rebrand but instead inspired by this very theme, specifically ‘After Hours’.
During the 90s and early 00s, there was a public-access television show that aired in Austin, Texas called “rAw TiMe” which broadcasted late on night (mostly between 1:30 and 3:00 AM). Initially it focused on alternative and underground music artists and bands (as the show was originally designed to promote local events), mostly rock, punk and metal but went on to encompass more genres. Some of these included mentioning No Doubt back in 1992 and later being the first one to interview them after “Tragic Kingdom” album release in 1995:
During the mid-to-late 90s, rAwTiMe shifted more towards the live calls, with new songs and music videos playing in between (at one instance there’s a “this is not a fucking request show” note on the screen ddd) and people would just say and talk about anything. There was a box specifically made for the show where the calls would be controlled by the hosts. It featured various hosts throughout the decade, but it experienced an explosion in popularity in 1999 when TinaRina. She only hosted for about 6 months (between June and November 1999, with a couple interview appearances in 2000). She perfectly encapsulated that late-90s mall-goth look, and really stood out with unapologetic and quick-witted responses. You can see some of these moments in a compilation here:

As always, there has to be a controversy. Tiffy was reportedly only 16 when hosting the show which only makes the comments from the callers a whole lot more disgusting. Being a minor at the time, it should come as no surprise she vanished from the public eye very soon after (I think she had her own blog called VinylDemon which got deleted, last post from there was made in 2004). Her true identity remains unknown to this day.
I remember stumbling upon a video about this show a few years ago when it started getting some traction (now I see there are TikToks praising TinaRina for being “badass” and unfazed by the obnoxious callers so that could be why). It is a pretty fascinating example of how this ‘give people anonymity and an audience and they will act like complete dickheads’ phenomenon existed before the Internet took over with the popularity.

In an alternative universe, this would’ve represented the UK at Eurovision in place of Gina G in 1996 (poor love never stood a chance) It’s been on my potentials list since I first started participating back on the Old Place and I’m fully expecting a slew of NUL POINTS.

If I had to predict a winner, I’d say my co-host @conor has the strongest chance.
My entry was a random discovery from last year or so and I decided to use it for the Virgin part of this theme (literally picked it just when the thread was ready to be opened). Kaye is a Belgian singer who released songs in Dutch and French during the late 80s/early 90s, I know nothing else about her. She’s giving a bit of Sandra Kim with the vocals and “Viens” stood out as an excellent 80s bop with a very catchy chorus. Did the host curse catch up with me by the end? #soon
